The Daily Texture for 02/03/2015
Old World Charm
Today's Daily Texture is Old World Charm, and features rich, dark browns tinted with rust, along with golden light highlights. I used this texture on both the bird composite image below and the portrait of the delightful pair of Meerkats. In both images, the texture was placed underneath and the unwanted parts of the photos were masked away, revealing the texture. The texture layer was then duplicated and placed on top. The bird image had several layers of the texture on top, in various layer modes from multiply to overlay to soft light, all in low opacities. The multiply layer was masked away some off of top half of the image as it darkened the birds and the light too much. But I left it dark on the bottom of the clock area. The Meerkats only have one additional duplication of the texture layer on top, set to soft light at 30%. After merging all the layers, I made a neutral density adjustment in Topaz Lens Effects to the bottom of the Meerkat image to darken it, which tied the subjects into ground level better. TIP: When using a subject on top of a texture, darkening the area around their feet or lowest part of their body will tie them into "ground level", making them look more realistic, as if they were really there.
