Commercial Use OK. | When I first created Today's Daily Texture "Blue Splash", I thought I was going to use it as some top layers on a few flowers in a vase photos -- and it would be perfect for that! Halfway through preparing my example, I looked into my birds folders and discovered this shot of a tiny Tufted Titmouse on a branch. He was very energetic at the time, and as I looked at him and looked at the texture, I thought it would be a perfect match of energy between the two. First, I placed the bird photo on top of the texture and masked away his background, along with the ends of the branch he was sitting on, blending it in softly with the underlying texture. Then, as I usually do, I placed a duplicate layer of the texture on top and started playing with various layer modes. I landed on "color dodge" layer mode and liked the way it brightened things up, especially when reducing the opacity of the layer down to about 40%. However...it brightened the bird too much, blowing out his highlights. So I moved the color dodge texture layer UNDER the bird, on top of the original texture layer. This made the texture brighter, but left the bird with the background already masked away, looking great. And I love how the color dodge layer brightened that bit of orange just above the left side of the bird...it now matches his orange coloring under his wing on the right side, and to me, that just tied everything together nicely. :) |
