The Daily Texture for 03/24/2015
Window Light
Today's Daily Texture features beautiful hues of lavender along with some golden brown and a splash of light in the center. It was the perfect texture choice for the two sample images below. On the Goldfinch image, I masked out his background and placed him on top of the texture. The bird didn't stand out enough for me, so I duplicated the texture layer and set it to multiply at 50% {keeping this duplicate layer UNDER the bird}. This made the background darker and richer, and served the purpose of helping the bird to stand out a little more. Then I duplicated the texture layer again, but this time placed it on top of everything and set it to soft light at 100%. The increased the light on the bird.
On the poodle image, I masked out her background, revealing the texture underneath. I paid careful attention to her feet and shadow on the floor, and left some of the floor visible in order to ground the dog within the image. Then I duplicated the texture layer and placed it on top, setting it to hard light at 100%. This increased the grit of the texture, which I liked because it went along with the highly textured fur of the dog. I masked a tiny bit of this hard light layer off her nose, which needed to be black and smooth and it didn't need the hard white of the texture covering it. But I liked the way this hard light layer interacted with her fur, so I left that in place.
